Ido Yoshimoto | West Marin

Amanita Phalloides, otherwise known as the death cap, is one of the most deadly and poisonous toadstools, a mushroom greenish in color, with a white stipe and gills. Ido Yoshimoto has lifted this fungus out of the wild and fossilized its print in this glass-paned, beveled shadow box. Treasure-hunting in the woods is crucial to Ido’s fieldwork process, in which he unearths natural remnants and enshrines them in a new context. In all of his work, Ido seeks to “illuminate artifacts of local natural history made unique with time.” This shadow box is a capsule of time, both raw and transformed. The box itself is made from Nicasio redwood in Ido’s workshop.
